Volunteering

We are often contacted by representatives from charitable organisations, non-profit medical organisations, non-government organisations, the Australian and New Zealand government and other national governments seeking appropriately trained and experienced anaesthetists to assist in anaesthesia care provision. 

We strongly support anaesthetists who want to assist in humanitarian medical work. This primarily involves the Asia Pacific region, although sometimes includes countries outside the region.

Volunteering database

We have created a database of specialist anaesthetists from Australia and New Zealand who are interested in assisting with humanitarian medical work. This is used to provide anaesthetists with both work overseas opportunities and to provide organisations with the names of anaesthetists interested in working abroad.

When contacted by an organisation our Overseas Development and Education Committee (ODEC) Chair will provide contact details for anaesthetists who have registered with the database. Organisations will not have direct access to the database.

Situations requiring anaesthetists include short-term periods, such as for service missions (plastics, urology, orthopaedic surgery etc.), covering conference leave of national anaesthetists, continuing medical education provision, or disaster response; and medium to long-term positions focusing on service provision and capacity building in low resource health systems.

Submitting your details to the database does not in any way represent a commitment to accept a position that might be offered. Anaesthetists in the database are encouraged to make their own enquiries as to whether a particular position is suitable for their skills and professional and personal aspirations. Similarly, organisations seeking anaesthetists will need to verify that anaesthetists meet the organisations operational requirements. 

Our database is an "introduction service" between positions available and anaesthetists available. The ASA can take no responsibility for the terms, conditions or consequences of any position offered or accepted by anaesthetists on the database. 

By submitting your details to the ASA ODEC database through this form you agree to have your professional and contact details provided to third party non-governmental and governmental organisations when the ASA is contacted by these groups seeking anaesthetists. The ASA makes no claim or guarantee that such humanitarian work will be suited to your level of experience, skill or risk profile. It is recommended that anaesthetists independently verify the local situation, safety and medical conditions before accepting any such work.
