We are a not-for-profit membership based organisation dedicated to supporting, representing and educating Australian Anaesthetists. We work with and for our members to ensure the high standards of the profession. We primarily focus on the economic, workforce and professional interests of our members.

Advocacy and representation

We advocate on behalf of our members at a wide range of levels including:
state and federal governments,
the Medical Services Advisory Committee,
private health insurers, and
other medical organisations such as the AMA and ANZCA.

We have a dedicated Policy Team to assist members and their practice staff (as well as members of the public) with economic, professional, legal and workforce concerns, such as:
position statements,
informed financial consent and billing,
ASA submissions,
complaint handling, and
anaesthesia rebates and fees.

Education and events

We are committed to promoting education and training in anaesthesia and related disciplines. Members have access to the following educational resources:
iamonline (interactive anaesthetic modules online); earn CPD points by completing these interactive
modules which cover professional development and risk management,
awards, prizes and research grants that support scientific endeavours and highlight excellence in the field.

We run a variety of state and national events throughout the year including:
an annual National Scientific Congress; members receive a discount on their registration,
state and territory run Continuing Medical Education meetings (in conjunction with ANZCA),
an annual conference for your Practice Managers,
developmental workshops for ASA Trainee Members.

Publications

You’ll have access to our wide range of publications including:
six copies per year of the Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Journal, targeted to those working in anaesthesia, intensive care medicine and pain medicine,
the quarterly member magazine Australian Anaesthetist, which provides valuable reports and information on the specialty and activities of the Society,
the Relative Value Guide, which provides comprehensive and accurate advice on billing and helps decipher the Medicare and private insurance rebate systems.

Merchandise

We have some merchandise to assist members in their practice available for purchase including:
the Anaesthesia & You brochure is available to help assist anaesthetists inform patients of the terms
and risks associated with anaesthesia,
pre-anaesthesia assessment forms to use in your practice,
ASA branded medical warning cards to assist with the identification of patients who have experienced
an anaesthetic incident.

Through our corporate partnerships, you are able to access special discounts on selected hotels, vehicle, financial services and more.

Volunteer work
We strongly support volunteer work and the promotion of anaesthesia training in developing countries through our Overseas Development and Education Committee.

Historical collection
Our museum and historic book collection provide a resource to explore the history and development of anaesthetic practice, highlighting uniquely Australian advancements.

ASA Benevolent Fund

Our Benevolent Fund assists members, their families and dependants during a time of serious personal hardship.
